What If I'm Not a Great Salesman? Advice From Barbara Corcoran.

When fresh-faced Derek Bluford pitches his startup QuickLegal to Shark Tank star Barbara Corcoran, she pulls no punches in telling him he's not a very good salesman. She gives him quick advice on why he needs a partner ("someone who's super creative, has an idea a minute, is a little bit of a nutjob, drinks too much, doesn't dress right") to handle the selling. It's a good lesson for all the entrepreneurs who have ideas and drive but lack salesmanship.

Quicklegal app links customers with legal questions with attorneys in real time

A Sacramento-based smartphone app for people with legal questions recently made a splash by winning a tech contest and signing up users.

In October, Quicklegal Inc. just launched its app for Apple and Android users.

The application links people who have legal questions with attorneys seeking clients. Users can ask some questions for free. They can also pay $39 for 15 minutes of legal advice in real time on the app. The app puts the customer face-to-face with the attorney in an on-demand video chat.

Founder of Sacramento’s QuickLegal will swim with ABC’s sharks

If Derek Bluford hadn’t come down with strep throat, he never would have tried a smartphone app that allowed him to immediately access a doctor.

He did, and within minutes, the doctor sent him a text with the address of a pharmacy where he could pick up his prescription. Bluford’s mind started spinning, and he thought to himself, “Why don’t I do this in the legal field? People need legal advice all the time.”

He founded his company in Sacramento, named it QuickLegal, and put out a beta test version in October 2014. It already has won the attention of Silicon Valley investors and major legal services companies; Bluford has secured roughly $1 million in outside investments.

Quick Legal | Derek Blueford | Startup of the Month

Derek Bluford was in eighth grade when his single mom got into legal trouble. She had gotten injured at her prison job and couldn’t work full-time. Disability assistance wasn’t enough to cover utilities, food and rent, and they were about to get evicted from their duplex rental in Elk Grove.

But through a friend of a friend, they connected with a lawyer.

“He pulled up in a nice car, a genuinely nice guy, and he helped us be able to stay at our house,” Bluford recalls. “He was Superman for me.”

Bluford grew up wanting to help rescue others from such legal problems. But instead of flying solo, he chose to use the power of modern technology to harness the abilities of attorneys nationwide. In 2014, Bluford created Quicklegal, a cloud-based legal practice management system, where lawyers can offer on-demand advice to customers with legal questions.

Derek Bluford, CEO of Quicklegal (USA)

When you’re an entrepreneur, I have found that there are plenty of organizations, companies, and people who swear to help you grow your business and make it a success. Most tend to end up just being an expense and lesson learned.

However, when it came to an Incubator & Accelerator program I participated in called Founders Space, it really helped me grow my business! When I first set out on the path of starting my new app, there were so many questions I had. I was literally at a loss. It was “How do I raise money?” and “How do I launch?” and “How do I get exposure?” and “How do I know if this is the right way?” and the list goes on. Thankfully, after some time in the Founders Space program, a lot of my questions were answered. And not only has my startup, Quicklegal, raised over $1 million, we are finally seeing some TRACTION!
