When fresh-faced Derek Bluford pitches his startup QuickLegal to Shark Tank star Barbara Corcoran, she pulls no punches in telling him he's not a very good salesman. She gives him quick advice on why he needs a partner ("someone who's super creative, has an idea a minute, is a little bit of a nutjob, drinks too much, doesn't dress right") to handle the selling. It's a good lesson for all the entrepreneurs who have ideas and drive but lack salesmanship.

Quicklegal app links customers with legal questions with attorneys in real time

A Sacramento-based smartphone app for people with legal questions recently made a splash by winning a tech contest and signing up users.

In October, Quicklegal Inc. just launched its app for Apple and Android users.

The application links people who have legal questions with attorneys seeking clients. Users can ask some questions for free. They can also pay $39 for 15 minutes of legal advice in real time on the app. The app puts the customer face-to-face with the attorney in an on-demand video chat.

Founder of Sacramento’s QuickLegal will swim with ABC’s sharks

If Derek Bluford hadn’t come down with strep throat, he never would have tried a smartphone app that allowed him to immediately access a doctor.

He did, and within minutes, the doctor sent him a text with the address of a pharmacy where he could pick up his prescription. Bluford’s mind started spinning, and he thought to himself, “Why don’t I do this in the legal field? People need legal advice all the time.”

He founded his company in Sacramento, named it QuickLegal, and put out a beta test version in October 2014. It already has won the attention of Silicon Valley investors and major legal services companies; Bluford has secured roughly $1 million in outside investments.

Quicklegal's Winning Experience at Techweek's LAUNCH
